Acrobatic gymnastics is a very spectacular sport, where the gymnast has to show their skills as both a top athlete and a performer. It is an official competition sport for both the FIG International Gymnastics Association and the Finnish Gymnastics Federation. Internationally, the levels in acrobatic gymnastics are high and the best in the world come from countries such as Great Britain, Russia and the United States. In Finland, it is a young and constantly evolving sport, where one can proceed quickly to competitive activities.
There are five different competition series in acrobatic gymnastics: women’s pair, men’s pair, mixed pair, women’s group (3) and men’s group (4). The competition performance consists of a program presented to music, of which there are three types: Balance, Dynamic and Combined. The competitors attempt to perform the most difficult movements, either technically or individually, or with their own pair or group. The movements are tied together in a choreography suitable for the music in order to form a magnificent package. Judges will award points to the program on the basis of the difficulty and purity of its movements, as well as the artistry as a whole.
